Aging is a natural part of life, yet for many elderly people, it comes with loneliness, abandonment, and heartbreak. In a world where parents sacrifice everything to raise their children, it is painful to see them neglected when they need support the most.
Uncle Abdul Rahman, an elderly man who dedicated his life to providing for his children, only to be left alone in his old age. His story is not just one of pain but also of faith, patience, and the hope that Allah never abandons His servants.
Interview with Uncle Abdul Rahman (A Father Left Alone in Old Age)
1. Can you tell us about your life before your children grew up?
"I worked hard all my life. I was a simple shopkeeper, earning just enough to educate my children and give them a better future. I never bought luxuries for myself—only for them. My wife and I used to dream about the days when they would grow up, succeed, and take care of us."
2. What happened when your children became independent?
"At first, everything seemed normal. They got married, moved to different cities, and got busy with their lives. I understood that they had responsibilities. But slowly, the calls became less frequent. The visits stopped. And one day, I realized—I was alone."
3. Do they provide for you financially?
"They send money sometimes, but what use is money when there is no love? I don’t want their money; I want their time, their presence. I want to sit with them, hear their voices, feel that I am still their father."
4. How did this affect your emotions?
"It feels like a slow death. Imagine dedicating your whole life to someone, and when you finally need them, they are nowhere to be found. It’s a pain that words cannot describe. I sit alone in this empty house, remembering the days when their laughter filled the rooms."
5. Did you try reaching out to them?
"Yes, many times. I call them, but they are always ‘too busy.’ They say, ‘We will visit soon,’ but that ‘soon’ never comes. I have stopped expecting anything now."
6. How do you spend your days now?
"I go to the masjid, read the Quran, and sit in the park watching people. Sometimes, I talk to strangers just to feel like someone is listening. My heart still hopes that one day my children will remember me."
7. What keeps you strong despite everything?
"Allah. When the world forgets you, Allah never does. I remind myself of the hadith where the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
‘Allah says: I am with My servant as long as he remembers Me.’ That gives me peace."
8. What advice do you have for children who neglect their parents?
"Remember that life is a cycle. One day, you will be old too. The way you treat your parents will come back to you. If you abandon them today, your own children might abandon you tomorrow."
9. What would you say to other elderly people who feel forgotten?
"Turn to Allah. People may leave you, but He never will. Find comfort in worship, spend time with good company, and never lose hope. And if possible, forgive those who hurt you—it will lighten your heart."
10. What is your final message to society?
"Take care of your elders before it’s too late. Don’t wait for their funeral to regret not spending time with them. Love them while they are alive, visit them, talk to them. Because once they are gone, you will never get another chance."
Conclusion
Uncle Abdul Rahman’s story is one of sacrifice, pain, and resilience. Unfortunately, his experience is not unique—many elderly parents are left alone after giving their lives for their children.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of parents:
“May his nose be rubbed in dust, may his nose be rubbed in dust, may his nose be rubbed in dust—whoever finds his parents, one or both, in their old age, and does not enter Paradise by serving them.” (Muslim)
Let this be a reminder to all of us: Honor your parents, cherish them, and never let them feel forgotten. Because one day, we will be in their place.
